Went for a short trip to Batam and Moro Island from Friday the 13th to the 16th (Jun 08) with my family and relatives.

As usual, i went to Batam to celebrate my grandpa's birthday. Think he is 76 this yr...still gg strong and healthy :) The photo below was taken during last yr's celebration, which everyone were present.

On the 14th (which happened to be Leroy's b'day), we made our way to Moro Island. Aunt Diana booked a coach bus to ferry the 19 of us to the jetty to take a speed boat to Moro. (The 19 of us include my family - 5, Ah yi's family - 5, Diana's family and maid - 4, Rachel's family - 3 and my grandparents. What a big group!) It was a 1 hr trip to Moro Island. Saw lots of small islands on the way and many kelongs.

The jetty, where we alighted. Some islands do not even have the concrete stairs. They only have ladder made from logs, like obstacles lydat. So scary...If you slip, you'll fall into the sea. Luckily for Moro Island, it was better, if not, i wonder how the kids and the elderlys will climb.

Moro Island is something like Pulau Ubin. A small island. A small village/town. Their mode of transport is motorcycle and trishaw. The latter is more for tourists.

Some of the houses there are mostly made of wooden planks, metal scrape and any material that they can find? The better ones are made of concrete.

Oh...did i mention why we went Moro Island this time round? Moro Island is actually the "hometown" of my mum and her family. It was where she and her siblings were born and grew up. One of my uncle is staying there, running a small provision shop selling daily necessities. Havnig not gone back for so many yrs, my mum and her sisters decided to go back this yr. I went before as a small kid but i don't think i remember anything about those trips. Hehe.

The "hotel" we stayed for the 2 nights there. Of cos, being a small island, the hotel could not be compared to the one we stayed at Batam. It was just a small room, with a queen size bed, a small wardrobe, a small dressing table, a small tv and a small bathroom. Almost every room had some problem. But anyway, it was better than nothing. Oh! And surprisingly, there was ktv at the hotel. Their songs are not the latest, 1 or 2 albums away. But we have to change cds ourselves. No menu for us to select. If there was no ktv, i can't imagine what i would be doing.

The people there leads a very simple life. Most of the pple there fish for a living. I can't imagine how they survived in the past, especially when there was no television. No wonder pple at that time can have so many kids.

My all-time favourite, Martabak. I always eat it when i go Indon. It's like the peanut pancake we have in S'pore, but the taste of the "kuey' is very different. Yummy!!

Fresh sugar cane stall along the street. Very nice too! Refreshing...with no residue...guess it's the best sugar cane juice i've ever had.

It was a very different experience as compared to other trips. Rural lifestyle. Makes us feel that we should feel grateful for what we have now. 2 days at Moro still ok for me. If i were to stay longer, i don't think i can take it. There's really nothing for me to do. If i'm gg there again, i'll buy mini mahjong set and play there! Hoho...me and my cousins were so bored that we played invisible mahjong. We were crazy. Haha. I filmed a game.

Oh...i have to confess something. Although there was nothing much there, i managed to buy 2 t-shirts. And surprisingly, they're quite nice and cheap! 2 for ard $6.50!
