A private tropical island 20 minutes from Batam — snorkeling, banana boat, canoe and beach volleyball included. Full-day package from Singapore with ferry, lunch and gear from SGD 188.
Ranoh Island is a 43-hectare private island resort sitting in the Riau Archipelago, roughly 20 minutes by speedboat from Batam Centre ferry terminal. Most visitors to Batam have never heard of it. Those who make the trip tend to come back.
The island's one-kilometre beachfront is its defining feature — a broad arc of white sand with clear, calm water that is safe for swimming and snorkeling year-round. Coral reefs around Ranoh, Dadap and Abang Islands are intact and well-populated with fish, making this the most consistently rewarding snorkeling spot accessible from Batam.
Day trips from Singapore are straightforward. The most popular route departs HarbourFront on the Batam Fast high-speed ferry and continues by speedboat from Batam; total journey time is approximately 90 minutes. Multiple tour operators offer full packages that include ferry transfers, speedboat, lunch and all watersports equipment.
Full-day packages typically include snorkeling with mask, fins and vest provided; banana boat rides (two to three loops per group); canoe hire by the hour; beach volleyball; hammock access; and a buffet lunch with Indonesian dishes and vegetarian options. Equipment condition is well-maintained and guides are on hand in the water throughout the snorkeling session.
Archery is available as an additional activity on some packages — worth asking about when booking. The island also has a freshwater shower block and changing rooms near the main beach, which makes the return journey more comfortable.
Snorkeling over the reefs around the neighbouring islands (Dadap and Abang) is included in most guided packages. These reefs are more intact than the main Ranoh beach reef and are typically covered on a 45-minute guided snorkel excursion by boat.
Full packages from Singapore: welcometobatam.com and batamgetaway.com both offer day trips from SGD 175–188 per person, including Batam Fast ferry from HarbourFront, speedboat transfer, all activities, lunch and return. These are the most convenient options for first-time visitors who don't want to arrange components separately.
DIY approach: take your own ferry to Batam Centre, then book island activities directly at approximately SGD 75 per person (minimum 2 pax) through Adventure Tour Singapore. This option is cheaper but requires more coordination and is best suited to experienced independent travellers.
GetYourGuide lists a private snorkeling and canoe variant that departs from Singapore and includes a private speedboat. Klook also offers the Ranoh Island experience with activity inclusions. Both are straightforward to book in SGD and are recommended for first-timers who want a confirmed booking before arriving.
The best time to visit is April to October (dry season), when seas are calmer and visibility underwater is at its highest. The island is accessible year-round, but November to March can bring stronger winds and choppier boat transfers. The operator will advise on conditions when you book.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen — standard sunscreen contains chemicals that damage coral reefs. A rash guard is recommended for extended snorkeling. No overnight accommodation is available for day-trip visitors; the island does have a small resort for those who want to stay, but this requires a separate booking.
