Grab is the primary ride-hailing app in Batam and works with a Singapore account — no Indonesian phone number required. The app is available in all major areas: Nagoya, Batam Centre, Nongsa, Waterfront City, Batu Aji and Sekupang. Coverage in more rural areas (Barelang, outer Nongsa) can be patchy, particularly late at night.
One important note: Grab drivers cannot pick up passengers directly inside ferry terminal compounds. Walk 50–100 metres outside the terminal gate before setting your pickup point. This avoids the premium that unmetered taxis at the terminal entrance will attempt to charge.
Batam Centre ferry terminal to Nagoya Hill Mall: IDR 25,000–45,000 (approximately SGD 2–4), 15–25 minutes. Batam Centre to Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple: IDR 30,000 (approximately SGD 2–3), 15 minutes. Batam Centre to Turi Beach Resort in Nongsa: IDR 120,000–150,000 (approximately SGD 9–12), 40–50 minutes.
From Sekupang terminal: Holiday Inn Resort is approximately IDR 30,000 (SGD 2–3), 15 minutes. From Harbour Bay terminal: Nagoya Hill Mall is approximately IDR 15,000 (SGD 1–2), five minutes. Prices fluctuate with surge pricing during peak hours (evenings, weekends) and bad weather.
Grab is generally the cheapest option and the most transparent on pricing. Metered taxis — Blue Bird and Silver Cab are the main operators — are reliable and can be booked by phone; they cost slightly more than Grab on most routes. Charter services (half-day or full-day) are the most economical for resort-hopping or touring multiple sites such as the Barelang Bridge circuit.
Set your Grab pickup point 50–100 metres outside the terminal gate to avoid surcharges and confusion. Gojek (Go-Car) is available as an alternative to Grab and often slightly cheaper for longer journeys. Motorcycle taxis (Gojek Roda 2) are the cheapest option but not recommended for tourists with luggage. Always confirm the fare before entering an unmetered taxi at the terminal; quoted prices of IDR 80,000–100,000 for short rides are common and negotiable.
