IDR vs SGD in Batam: the best exchange strategy, where to find money changers, ATM locations, card acceptance levels and a realistic price guide for food, transport and hotels.
The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the only legal tender in Batam. Singapore Dollars are occasionally accepted informally at tourist-facing stalls, but always at poor exchange rates — sometimes 10–15% below the fair market rate. You will spend and receive IDR for the vast majority of transactions.
The denominations may look alarming to first-time visitors: IDR 50,000 (approx. SGD 3.80) is a typical food-stall note; IDR 100,000 is roughly SGD 7.60. Plan on spending IDR 500,000 or more per day for a moderate trip including meals, local transport and incidentals.
Exchange rate as of January 2026: 1 SGD = approximately 13,176 IDR (YouTrip data, 19 January 2026). Check XE.com or your bank for current rates before traveling. Rates fluctuate daily.
Context: a rate above 13,000 IDR per SGD is historically strong for Singapore travellers. The rate has been near multi-year highs, making Batam particularly good value for Singaporeans as of early 2026. Track the live rate on xe.com, Wise or Google before your trip.
Money changers at Peninsula Plaza and Lucky Plaza in Singapore frequently offer rates close to the mid-market rate. Compare rates at cashchanger.co/singapore/sgd-to-idr before you leave Singapore. Bring clean, undamaged notes: SGD 50 and SGD 100 denominations consistently get better rates than smaller bills.
The money changers in the Nagoya Hill area offer the most competitive rates in Batam. Avoid the currency counters at ferry terminals and airport — they charge significantly worse rates, sometimes 8–12% below market. The few minutes it takes to reach the Nagoya area will save you meaningful money on larger amounts.
For SGD-to-IDR transfers before your trip, multi-currency cards like YouTrip (popular among Singapore residents) offer mid-market rates with low fees. Specialist transfer services such as Wise are another option if you have an Indonesian bank account and want to send IDR directly to it.
Revolut also supports IDR and offers comparable exchange rates for existing users. A YouTrip example from January 2026: 1 SGD = 13,058 IDR (versus a typical bank rate with 2–3% markup). YouTrip also provides the first SGD 400 per month in ATM withdrawals free of charge. If you are exchanging significant amounts, these cards are often the best overall option.
ATMs are widely available inside Nagoya Hill Mall, BCS Mall and DC Mall. Use ATMs inside malls or attached to bank branches — avoid standalone street ATMs due to skimming risk. Most Indonesian banks (BCA, BNI, BRI, Mandiri) accept Visa and Mastercard. Expect a withdrawal fee of IDR 15,000–25,000 per transaction, charged by the local bank.
Cards are accepted at international hotels, major mall restaurants, higher-end spas and anchor stores in Nagoya Hill Mall. Visa and Mastercard work reliably at 4 and 5-star hotels. American Express is limited to premium hotel restaurants and a few upscale venues.
Cash is essential for: street food stalls, local hawker centres, pasar (markets), most local transport (metered taxis) and many neighbourhood restaurants outside major malls. Always carry IDR cash — you will need it daily.
Indonesia's national QR payment standard, QRIS, is accepted at many Batam restaurants and shops and works with GoPay, OVO, DANA and BCA Mobile. For Singapore tourists, the practical options are limited: GoPay and OVO require an Indonesian phone number and are not set up easily for short visits. Bank Indonesia has bilateral QR agreements with Malaysia and Thailand, but cross-border QRIS for Singapore PayNow users in Batam merchants was not confirmed as fully operational as of 2026.
Grab works well in Batam: link your Singapore card to the app, set the country to Indonesia, and fares are charged in IDR directly to your card. No currency conversion hassle for ride-hailing.
Many Indonesian payment apps (GoPay, OVO, DANA) require an Indonesian mobile number to register. If you plan to use them, an Indonesia eSIM or local SIM gives you a working Indonesian number. Airalo offers Indonesia eSIMs from $4.50 USD with Telkomsel, Indosat and XL network options — no physical SIM swap needed. This also covers connectivity from the moment you board the ferry, avoiding Singapore roaming charges.
Food and coffee: local kopi IDR 8,000–15,000 (SGD 0.60–1.15); mie tarempa noodles IDR 20,000–30,000 (SGD 1.50–2.30); full meal at a local warung IDR 45,000–60,000 (SGD 3.40–4.55); mid-range restaurant three-course for two IDR 150,000 (SGD 11.40); seafood restaurant per person IDR 100,000–250,000 (SGD 7.60–19).
Transport: Grab from Batam Centre to Nagoya IDR 25,000–45,000 (SGD 2–3.40); Grab from Batam Centre to Nongsa resorts IDR 120,000–150,000 (SGD 9–11.40); metered taxi base fare IDR 10,000 (SGD 0.76).
Spa and wellness: basic foot massage 60 min IDR 80,000–120,000 (SGD 6–9); full body massage 60 min IDR 150,000–200,000 (SGD 11–15); hotel spa package IDR 350,000–600,000 (SGD 26–45).
Hotels per night: budget OYO/2-star IDR 350,000–500,000 (SGD 26–38); mid-range 3–4-star IDR 700,000–1,500,000 (SGD 53–114); luxury 5-star IDR 2,000,000+ (SGD 152+).
Tipping is not mandatory in Batam. Most mid-range and upscale restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically. For exceptional service at a restaurant, IDR 10,000–20,000 is appreciated. For spa therapists, IDR 20,000–50,000 is appropriate. For Grab and taxis, rounding up the fare is a common courtesy but not expected.
Store excess cash and additional cards in your hotel safe. Avoid informal street currency changers — counterfeit notes and short-counting are documented risks. Never exchange money with touts at ferry terminals or on the street. Learn the basic IDR denominations before arrival: the IDR 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 notes cover most daily transactions.
